What Percentage of Electricity Is Used for Lighting in a Typical House?

When the electricity bill is high, the biggest culprit is the lights that remain on. It is thought that a significant amount of energy will be saved when the lights are turned off or dimmed. Is it possible to cut the electric bill in half by simply turning off the lights? Short answer; No.

In an ordinary house, electricity consumption due to lighting constitutes approximately 10 percent of the total consumption. This rate is around 30 percent for commercial buildings. In other words, if your house consumes 250 kWh of electricity, only 25 kWh of this is related to lighting. Even if you disable all lighting, your electricity consumption will decrease to 225 kWh. This means that your electricity bill will be reduced by approximately 10 percent.

Much more of the electricity consumption in homes comes from appliances such as electric heaters, air conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines, irons and televisions. It is possible to save a lot of money by reducing the use of such devices.

Another way to lower your electricity bill is to use energy efficient appliances. The efficiency of electrically operated devices can be read from the energy label on it. The closer it is to the letter A shown on the energy label, the more efficiently it uses electrical energy.

When it comes to lighting, the most efficient technology is LEDs. You can save some energy by replacing all incandescent, halogen or fluorescent lamps in your home with LED lamps. The effect of this change on your electricity bill will be limited to your energy consumption from lighting. Other advantages of LED bulbs; It is long-lasting, environmentally friendly and emits less heat.

LED lamps can also have different luminous efficiency in themselves. To choose the most efficient LED bulb, it is sufficient to divide the lumen by the watt. E.g; A 1,000 lumen and 10 W LED bulb has a luminous efficiency of 100 lm/W. A 900 lumen and 8 W bulb has a luminous efficiency of 112.5 lm/W. In such a case, it would be a better choice to buy this 8 W bulb.

Measuring devices called Wattmeters can be used to find out how much energy bulbs and other electrical devices consume. Such devices plug directly into the wall socket and display the total power consumption of the connected device. This is the best way to find out which device affects how much on the electricity bill.

No matter how small the percentage, it is necessary to turn off unused lights. This not only lowers your electricity bill, but also contributes to a better world. Without forgetting; this is a simple way to make mothers happy.
