Electronic circuit boards in electrical equipment get dirty over time depending on usage. Various dirt accumulated on the circuit boards can cause connection problems and cause the circuit to malfunction. Electronic circuits can be cleaned to make them work better and last longer.
If appropriate cleaners are used and certain procedures are followed during cleaning, it is possible to clean the circuit board without damaging the sensitive electronic components.
The best way to clean an electronic circuit is to use isopropyl alcohol. Isopropyl alcohol is a great PCB cleaner as it is inexpensive and evaporates quickly. Isopropyl alcohol is safe for circuit boards and most components on the board. Sensor, microphone, speaker, switch and similar components should be covered with a foil or paper label during cleaning.
A small brush with soft bristles, a cotton swab, or a soft cloth can be used to apply the isopropyl alcohol to the circuit board. A paint brush or toothbrush is a good choice. Cutting the paintbrush diagonally makes it easier to reach tight areas. Larger brushes may be preferred depending on the size of the circuit board.
Isopropyl alcohol is filled into a small container to remove dirt from the circuit board. The brush is dipped in alcohol and the tip is squeezed to drain excess alcohol. The dirty area is gently brushed to remove any dirt or residue from the circuit board. This process is repeated until the circuit board is completely cleaned. Before powering the circuit, ensure that the alcohol has evaporated and the board is completely dry.
It is recommended to use 90% or higher purity isopropyl alcohol to clean PCBs. High purity isopropyl alcohol has a high evaporation rate as it contains less water. A lower rating is not safe for cleaning electronics.
Isopropyl alcohol may cause adverse effects in case of skin contact. For this reason, latex gloves and safety glasses should be used during cleaning.
Using compressed air is also a good way to remove dust on circuit boards and electronic components. Baking soda, purified water, and household cleaners can also be used to clean circuit boards. An ultrasonic cleaner is needed to remove dirt from inaccessible areas.
