Did you know that approximately 1.35 million people die each year due to traffic accidents? More than half of those killed in traffic accidents are vulnerable road users, namely pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists. Wrong decisions made by road users are shown as the primary cause of traffic accidents. Estonian technology company Bercman has an innovative solution to mitigate these risks.
The smart pedestrian crossing aims to increase the awareness of road users and inform them about the potential traffic hazard. The smart pedestrian crossing monitors road users and provides various notifications with the help of cameras and sensors. It uses artificial intelligence algorithms to detect traffic hazards and predict the movements of road users. When it detects a dangerous situation, it warns the drivers with flashing LED lights and gives an audible warning to the pedestrians.
The smart pedestrian crossing is designed to communicate with vehicles thanks to its V2X (Vehicle-to-everything) infrastructure. In this way, it can transmit safety messages about the presence of road users to connected vehicles. This feature provides vehicle drivers with an extra pair of eyes.
There is also a web-based user interface that allows accessing and managing data in Bercman’s traffic management products. In this way, technical conditions can be monitored remotely and notifications can be received about possible malfunctions. All statistical data are presented graphically and can be downloaded upon request. The software can be integrated with other systems as it has a inclusive API.
The smart pedestrian crossing developed by Bercman can be installed later on the existing infrastructure thanks to its modular structure. This means lower installation costs.
